The situation
Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (API), the parent company of Priceline, Soul Pattinson, and Pharmacist Advice, set up a new (32,506sqm) distribution centre in Marsden Park, Sydney. KNAPP Australia were engaged to design, build and install a large, automated racking and conveyor system.
The new facility houses extensive conveyor systems that required permanent access for operators to move around freely and conduct required maintenance. There was a lot of other infrastructure and structural steel surrounding the complex layout and design of the conveyor systems, and a conveyor system on the mezzanine also required an access solution for around the systems installed.
Solution
Distribution centres can be a complex weave of conveyors and other machinery that require constant maintenance and overseeing. Ensuring that personnel are moving safely and effectively around these areas is often difficult and if not addressed can result in significant downtime and potential injury.
With multiple challenges to solve, Kattsafe products were the perfect intralogistics choice. The lightweight, modular, and simple design of Kattsafe platform and stair systems would enable access up to, over and around the existing structures.
With product selection made the Builda configurator was used for the initial design. This smooth and easy process, allowed the engineers to build their own access solutions, see them in 3D and make any changes in real time.

After creation of the concept drawings utilising the Builda configurator, consultation between Kattsafe and Knapp was required before the final designs were produced which incorporated elevated walkways, access stairs and platforms.

During installation Knapp Australia found the modular design of the Kattsafe products were a lifesaver as there were a lot of changes required and last minute on-site adjustments. Being lightweight aluminium, it simplified the installation process dramatically.
When providing intralogistic solutions for these types of facilities stairs, platforms and crossover systems are often an excellent choice but ensuring they fit in with existing systems can be labour intensive and problematic. The adjustable design of Stair and Platform Systems ensures that should any modifications be required once they arrive to site, this can be easily done in situ and without the need for a total system redesign.
