AP126 Concrete mount anchor – dissimilar metals

Hello and welcome to our next Kattsafe Tek Talk.

Today I’m going to be giving you a little bit of an overview of the AP126.

The question has been raised about dissimilar metals (refer to our anchors FAQ section - what is galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion) between the eyebolt, being stainless steel, and the anchor being zinc.

Now, yes there could be issues with dissimilar metals and that is why in our installation manual we do not recommend for exterior use. That is in areas where water could penetrate the hole and then cause an issue with the dissimilar metals inside. So, it’s not recommended for exterior use whereby the water can get in and cause a dissimilar metal between the stainless and the zinc. Opposed that that, if it’s used indoors in areas where moisture cannot get in there’s nothing wrong with the system. Dissimilar metals only occurs where moisture exists.

Now, another point is we can get these in stainless steel, it’s not part of our product range, we can get them in as a special order but they do not come with the snap-off head or the pre-torque setting head. So, that is the main reason why we keep the zinc type, is that it’s got the torque setting on the head.

So, just to recap, the way that these are installed is that once the anchor is installed into the concrete the bolt then gets tightened up until the head snaps off, this red cap here, that bolt reveals another head inside, which then gets removed and that whole bolt comes out. The M12 eyebolt then takes its place and goes into that position and then gets replaced with that.

So, another suggestion is to always put some anti-seize paste or some sort of lubricant down in the bottom so that it doesn’t gall up on the bottom little olive section here.

Another thing just to remember is that these anchors are very good for use where you need to install it and use it straight away, so it can be pull tested. Our recommendation for any anchor in a wet area or where water may be present is to use the chemical anchor type system because the chemical itself will seal the hole that you’ve drilled in the concrete, therefore not allowing any water penetration into that hole.

So, there we have it, again just to recap  the AP126 brilliant for immediate use where it can be installed and pull tested and used straight away, whereas chemical anchors are a lot better for areas where there may be potential of water in the area.
