The relocation of the Railcar Depot to Dry Creek was an opportunity for the government of South Australia to provide a maintenance depot that would revitalise the metropolitan rail network.
The maintenance facility houses railcar workshops, pits and train lifting machinery where more than 50 operators undertake servicing and maintenance activities. The state-of-the-art maintenance depot supports the highest levels of work safety and sustainability.
Fall protection was required for the depot's maintenance personnel to ensure their safety when performing duties in the large rail sheds but they needed to allow ease of mobility.
Solution - RAPTOR Fall Arrest Rigid Rails
When choosing the right product for this job, the decision was easy.
Compared to restrictive overhead cable systems, the RAPTOR Rigid Rail System provides a high level of safety due to minimum rail deflection in a fall situation. This results in the operator having less chance of injury in the case of a fall on to protruding objects or surfaces. Additionally, the uninterrupted smooth functionality ensures complete freedom of movement for the operator not available in other systems.
With a massive installation of 810 metres it was anticipated that there could be huge delays in getting an operational system in on time.
However, as our installer commented, "Whilst the safety features of RAPTOR are notable, its unique design allowed us to reduce on site lead times from six to two weeks, resulting in immediate system use. Other systems would have required at least six weeks to complete the installation of 810 metres. The modular componentry resulted in a simple, swift and trouble free installation process.”
A system that required minimal maintenance was also part of the checklist and RAPTOR Rail again was the perfect fit: the proprietary system has minimal moving parts and maintenance is only required every 12 months. Additionally, the system can be easily extended should the facility undergo any future growth.
